Macbeth

Act 1, Scene 1 Predictions about the play: Because of the witches I think that there is something bad coming, they are a kind of bad omen when they say” when shall we three meet again… When battles won and lost” I think they will meet and cause trouble maybe they will join with the winning side but they are waiting till they know who will win.

Act 1, Scene 3 Scene summary: The first witch says how she had tormented a soldier whose wife had been mean to her. The witches meet Macbeth saying he will be the thane of Cawdor and the king, then Banquo asks to know his future and they say his kids will be kings. Ross and Angus arrive and tell Macbeth that because of his bravery he will be Thane of Cawdor. Macbeth is shocked that the witches were right and considers killing Duncan (King) despite Banquo’s warning.

Act 1, Scene 4 Quote: “Stars, hide your fires! Let not light see my black and deep desires;” when Macbeth says this he says it only to the audience revealing that he wants to be king and that he doesn’t want anyone to know.

Act 1, Scene 5: Lady Macbeth silique In her silique lady Macbeth uses various metaphors to convey her thought and plans. When she says ” And fill me from the crown to the toe top-full of direst cruelty!” she refers to cruelty as a liquid yet again and that it should fill her up, with no room for regret, kindness or remorse. Before this, she says “unsex me here” meaning to get rid of her femininity as if women can not be cruel like men and only men can have ambition which is maybe what was thought back then

Act 1, Scene 6 the king and the Scottish lords arrive at Macbeth’s castle. Duncan highly praises the castle, he thanks lady Macbeth for her hospitality and he asks to go inside to see Macbeth who he claims to love dearly

Act 2, Scene 1, Macbeth’s soliloquy Shakespeare uses a variety of language features in his work. A predominant one in this scene is personification. When Macbeth believes he sees a dagger before him he says “come let me touch thee” By referring to this inanimate object as a “thee” he personifies it which only makes him seem madder than he already is by seeing things.

Act 2, Scene 2: Summary Lady Macbeth waits for that news from Macbeth and says that she would have done it if he had not looked so innocent which is surprising. When Macbeth comes and says it is done he is obviously regretting it and he makes this clear by saying ” Will all great Neptune’s ocean wash this blood clean from my hands? No, this my hand will rather multitudinous seas in incarnadine. Making the green one red”, again he is using a metaphor the blood being his crime and his hands his conscience. He basically says that he can not wash away that guilt that he feels for killing the king. then lady Macbeth tells him to go frame the servants he says he can’t do it s she does.

Act 2, Scene 3-4: Summary pathetic fallacy

Act 3, Scene 1: Summary Alone, Banquo says he’s suspicious that Macbeth killed Duncan, Macbeth enters and enquires if Banquo is going riding, Banquo says he will be going until dinner and he will be taking his son Fleance. Macbeth takes this opportunity to summon the murderers he has hired. He orders them to kill Banquo and his son, because he doesn’t feel safe with them around.

Act 3, Scene 2-3: Summary After lady Macbeth inquires a servant about Banquo she is left alone and confesses that she is disappointed with the out come of her actions, but when Macbeth enters she tells him to think no more if his actions Macbeth then goes on to say that he is jealous of Duncan who can sleep peacefully in in his death while he a can not in living Lady Macbeth tells him to hide his thought from the people around him so as to not be found out. When Macbeth mentions Banquo and Fleance, Lady Macbeth hints at yet another murder but Macbeth does not tell her his plans, as to keep her innocent, which is ironic considering what we know of Lady Macbeth. We then see three murders enter and the two inquire as to why the third one is there it turns out that Macbeth has sent them, meaning he is worried that the first two will not get the job done.When the three murders all attack Banquo and Fleece when they enter that mange to kill Banquo but Fleance Escapes.

Macbeth Translation: Act 3,Scene 4

MACBETH

You know your rank; sit down in that order and welcome

Lords

Thanks to your majesty.

MACBETH

 I shall mingle and play the humble host. 

Lady Macbeth will sit in her chair until

            I request her

LADY MACBETH

Say hi to all the guests as they are welcome

First Murderer appears at the door

MACBETH

They respond with their thanks and

I shall sit in the middle and be happy

 and have a toast.

           Approaching the face.

There’s blood on your face

First Murderer

It’s Banquo’s

MACBETH

It’s better on you than inside him.

First Murderer

I killed him, my lord,

MACBETH

You are the best at murdering, and the one who murdered Fleance must be good also, but if you murdered him to then you are the best. 

First Murderer

Most royal sir,

Fleance escaped.

MACBETH

Now I’m scared again and if this had worked I would have been perfect,  

But now I am all tangled up with doubts and fears, But Banquo’s dead?

First Murderer

yes, my good lord, he is dead in a ditch 

with twenty gashes on his head. 

MACBETH

Thanks for that:

Macbeth lays dead; But Fleance fled, Right now he does not have enough power to do anything but over time he will gain it. Hath nature that in time will venom breed, I will see you tomorrow.

          Exit Murderer

LADY MACBETH

My royal lord, you are not entertaining the guests 

They need to know they are welcome,

 because if they just want to eat it is best to do that at home

There needs to be a little more ceremony

MACBETH

Thanks for reminding me!

Since good digestion needs a good appetite which means both of them, good health

MACBETH

We would have all the nobles in Scotland under one roof if Banquo was here. 

I hope he is late not something bad happened to him.     

ROSS

His absence means he has broken his promise sir, please sit down.

MACBETH

The table’s full.

LENNOX

Here’s an empty seat sir.

MACBETH

LENNOX

Here, my good lord. What’s wrong, your highness?

MACBETH

Which of you has done this?

What, my good lord?

MACBETH

           You cannot say I did it. Don’t shake your head at me.

ROSS

Gentlemen, rise: his highness is not well.

LADY MACBETH

Sit down, friends

My husband is often like this,

And has been since he was young 

Stay seated

His fit is momentary

He will be well again if you pay too much attention to him,

You shall offend him and extend his anger:

Eat and don’t pay attention to him

 Are you a man?

MACBETH

 Yes, and a brave one.  I have seen something worse than the devil

LADY MACBETH

Nonsense!

This is just your imagination

Like the air-drawn dagger you said,

led you to Duncan.

These don’t look like real fear

 Looks like what a woman would do if her grandma was reading her a scary story 

Shame on you!

Why are you making those faces? 

When it is over you’ll look like a fool

MACBETH

Look over there. ( to the ghost ) what do you want? What do you have to say? If the dead can return from their grave what’s to stop the bird from eating the bodies. So what is the point on burying them?

GHOST OF BANQUO vanishes

LADY MACBETH

What, has you foolish fear paralyzed you?

MACBETH

If I’m standing here then I saw him.

LADY MACBETH

Nonsense!

MACBETH

In ancient times, before there were laws to make the land safe and peaceful, there was a lot of bloodshed. And since then there have been a lot of murders too awful to talk about. It used to be that if you killed a man he would just die, and that would be it but now they rise from the dead to push us off our stools which is even stranger than murder.

LADY MACBETH

My king,

Your noble friends miss your company

MACBETH

( to the guests ) I forgot about them.

Don’t worry about me my friends, I have a strange order which doesn’t shock those who know me well anymore. Let’s raise a toast to love and health and a toast to our friend Banquo. I wish he was here! Let’s drink to everyone here. And to Banquo

MACBETH

 Go and get out of my sight! Go back in your grave 

There is no marrow in your bones and your blood is cold. you are staring at me with eyes that cannot see. 

LADY MACBETH

Good friends, 

Think of this as something normal

Although it is spoiling the fun of tonight

MACBETH

I am brave like any other man

Approach me like the rugged Russian bear,

or an armoured rhinoceros, or the mighty tiger;

Take any shape apart from the one you are now 

And I will never tremble in fear

Or come back to life

And challenge me to a duel with my sword;

If tremble with fear then call me a baby girl.

I am a man again becauses the ghost is gone so please stay seated

LADY MACBETH

You have ruined the fun and disrupted the good meeting 

By making a fool of yourself

MACBETH

Can things happen so quickly ,

And make us feel astonished?

You make me feel like I don’t know myself

When I see you looking at terrible sights 

Yet keep a straight face 

While mine is filled with fear.

ROSS

What sights, my lord?

LADY MACBETH

Please do not speak to him

He is getting worse and worse;

Questions enrages him so please leave

LENNOX

LADY MACBETH

Exeunt all but MACBETH and LADY MACBETH

MACBETH

There is an old saying that goes  blood will have blood:

Stones have been known to move and trees to speak;

Too bring guilty men to justice

By magpies and other creatures have exposed

some murderers. 

What is the time of the night?

LADY MACBETH

It is almost morning,

Although you cannot tell whether it is morning or night

MACBETH

What do you think about Macduff not coming when I command him?

LADY MACBETH

Did you send for him, sir?

MACBETH

I heard of this before, but I will send for him. 

In every lords house, I have a servant spying for me.

Tomorrow, while it’s still early,

I will go see the witches. They will tell me more, because I am determined to now the words of what will happen. My safety is the only important thing right now. I have waded so far into this blood that it would be just as hard to go back as to keep on killing people. I have some plans that I am going to put into action. But I must do these before I think about them to much.

LADY MACBETH

You haven’t slept.

MACBETH

          Yes, lets go to sleep. My strange and self-delusions

           just come from inexperience,

We are still learning about crime

Act 3, Scene 5-6: Summary Once again we meet the whiches on a stormy heath but this time they are there to meet there goddess Hecate. Hecate is furious that they meddled with Macbeth without consulting her and she announces that she will take over and continue to push Macbeth the way he’s going. she also says that she will offer him immortality because she knows he will want it and she believes that it wont do him any good in the long run.

That same night, Lennox discusses the state of the kingdom with another lord. Banquos murder has been blamed on Fleance who has fled. But even so both men suspect Macbeth who they refer to as a tyrant, which is treason at this time. the Lord continues on to tell Lennox that Macduff has gone to England where he will join Malcolm in requesting the king for aid.

Act 4, Scene 2 summary Lady Macduff says that her husband fleeing made him look guilty and that he is weak for not staying to protect her and the kids, then Rosse says that it was noble of Macduff to leave. When Rosse leaves Lady Macduff says Macduff is dead to her and her son asks why she goes on to say what she thinks a traitor is and her definition is not unlike Macbeth. Lady Macduff is then warned about the murder but before she can leave it comes and kills her son and she flees.

Act 4, Scene 3 summary In this scene Malcolm is suspicious of Macduff suspecting that he might betray him for Macbeth. To test his loyalty to him Malcolm pretends to be even more sinful than Macbeth. even though malcolm is doing this Macduff continues to support him until he can’t take it anymore and says “O Scotland! Scotland!” thus proving his loyalty to his country and malcolm stops pretending. When Malcolm goes on about how amazing the king of england is, Rosse arrives to tell the latest news from Scotland. Rosse reports that things are even worse in scotland but Macduff’s family are well

Act 5, scene 1-4 summary When start with lady Macbeth’s gentlewoman informing the doctor of lady Macbeth’s sleepwalking habits, then they both witness lady Macbeth trying to wash her hand, which comes back to the symbol of the blood on her hands which now she can’t seem to get rid of. Then she speaks of murders and graves which is almost a confession. This puts both the doctor and the gentlewoman in danger because they know to much. With the scottish army that are against macbeth closing in the thanes t

Creeps in this petty pace from day to day.
